Perinatal Mental Health Week 2024: Understanding and Supporting New Parents
The journey into parenthood is often portrayed as a joyous occasion, but the reality can be quite different for many. The transition can be tough, and for many new parents, it comes with significant challenges. In fact, 1 in 5 new mums and 1 in 10 new dads experience perinatal depression and anxiety, affecting around 100,000 Australian parents each year.
Acknowledging the Struggle
It’s important to recognise that these feelings are not uncommon. The pressures of adjusting to a new role, coupled with the physical and emotional changes that accompany pregnancy and early parenthood, can create a perfect storm for mental health struggles.
The Importance of Awareness
Understanding that you are not alone is crucial. Many parents go through similar experiences, yet the stigma surrounding mental health often makes it difficult to talk about. By bringing these issues to light, we can foster an environment where seeking help is normalised.
Support is Available
Perinatal Mental Health Week, created by PANDA (Perinatal Anxiety & Depression Australia) in 2005, is a pivotal time for communities and health professionals to deepen their understanding of perinatal mental health. From November 17 to 23, we invite you to participate in this important initiative, which aims to raise awareness and break down the barriers surrounding mental health during pregnancy and early parenthood.
Throughout Perinatal Mental Health Week, PANDA will share valuable resources and information, including:
- Support Options: Learn about various support services available to you and your loved ones.
- Real Conversations: Get insights into what a call for help might sound like, alleviating the fear of the unknown.
- Community Stories: Hear from individuals who have reached out for help, highlighting the positive impact of early intervention.
- Encouraging Quotes: PANDA will share quotes to normalise seeking help and inspire you to take that first step.
Making the Call: The First Step
For many, the journey to mental wellness begins with a single, daunting step: making the call. Whether you’re grappling with mental health challenges or concerned about a loved one, reaching out can feel overwhelming. You might find yourself questioning how to express your feelings or worrying about the response you might receive. This Perinatal Mental Health Week, we want to emphasise that making that call is not only important but also achievable. You are not alone, and help is available.
Why Sharing Matters
Every story shared helps dismantle the stigma surrounding perinatal mental health. By sharing experiences and discussing challenges, we create a culture where reaching out for help is not only accepted but encouraged. The more we talk about it, the easier it becomes for others to find their voice.
Take Action
Join us in promoting awareness and support during Perinatal Mental Health Week 2024. Whether you’re sharing your story, participating in community events, or simply reaching out for help, your involvement matters. Remember, the most important step in your journey to wellness starts with making that call.
Together, let’s ensure that every parent feels supported and empowered, fostering a healthier future for families across Australia.
